Update: PhD Life in November 2022

It’s been a while. I just wanted to hop on to provide a bit of an update on where I’m at and how things are going. As many folks might know, I’m currently pursuing my PhD part-time via Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) and San Jose State University (SJSU).

I started my program in July of this year and have jumped in with both feet. The program kicked off with a week-long residency in San Jose in August and I’ve been working on the early stages of my dissertation (and proposal) since that point.

The program I’m in is entirely research focused, with no classes or comprehensive exams — that was one of the reasons I picked it. Last week I passed my first ‘milestone,’ essentially a review of an expanded PhD proposal and a check-in on where I’m at in my research. Beyond that, I’m doing a lot of reading, thinking, and organizing.

I’ve fallen in love the idea of an action research PhD that centers community participation and engagement. I’m still working on the methods, logistics, and practicalities of what that looks like in reality. But I’m excited by the possibility.

So, if anyone wants to chat action research, cataloguing of Indigenous library materials, or community focused PhDs hit me up.
